MIRCH by Tandoor

Interior design to go

By Brian Gallagher 16.10.20

The Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona or as it has been affectionately recently termed ‘Ravalistan’ is a great area to explore the flavours and culture of the Indian sub-continent. With a significant migrant population of natives the food here is authentic and numerous restaurants have sprung up over recent years. Mirch by Tandoor is one of them, Isabel Lopez Vilalta + Asociados is responsible for its design. Although Mirch is also an eat-in restaurant most of the customers order to go. This conditions the design, it must be practical, make an immediate impact and be highly resistant.

The finishes are therefore simple and robust, mostly ceramic and metal. Yellows, oranges and reds are the predominant colours that also define the food at Mirch, the word is the Indian word for spicy. The use of natural materials predominates, such as earthenware flooring and tiles of different formats, linear tactile tiles along the dining areas and colourful tiles on the other walls. Graphics and neon lighting add to the ‘outdoor’ feel of the place.

This small restaurant and take-away measuring only 45 sq.m. is located in Plaça dels Ángels of the Raval. Inspired by a “street” aesthetic that also reflects the culinary offering by Ivan Surinder's: informal Indian-Catalan food.

For furniture the tables are simply an iron structure with a large-format tile top and cardboard stools converted into seats to make the most of the space.
